Before sleep

بِاسْمِكَ اللَّهُمَّ أَمُوتُ وَأَحْيَا

Bismika Allāhumma amūtu wa aḥyā

With Your name, O Allah, I die and I live.

On waking

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَحْيَانَا بَعْدَ مَا أَمَاتَنَا وَإِلَيْهِ النُّشُورُ

Al-ḥamdu lillāhil-ladhī aḥyānā baʿda mā amātanā wa ilayhin-nushūr

All the praises are for Allah Who has made us alive after He made us die (sleep) and unto Him is the Resurrection.

Before sleep

Qul huwallāhu aḥad. Allāhuṣ-ṣamad. Lam yalid wa lam yūlad. Wa lam yakun lahu kufuwan aḥad. Qul aʿūdhu birabbil-falaq. Min sharri mā khalaq. Wa min sharri ghāsiqin idhā waqab. Wa min sharrin-naffāthāti fil-ʿuqad. Wa min sharri ḥāsidin idhā ḥasad. Qul aʿūdhu birabbin-nās. Malikin-nās. Ilāhin-nās. Min sharril-waswāsil-khannās. Alladhī yuwaswisu fī ṣudūrin-nās. Minal-jinnati wan-nās.

Surah Al-Ikhlas, Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas (recited into cupped hands and wiped over the body, three times).

Before sleep

Allāhu lā ilāha illā huwal-ḥayyul-qayyūm, lā taʾkhudhuhū sinatun wa lā nawm, lahū mā fis-samāwāti wa mā fil-arḍ, man dhal-ladhī yashfaʿu ʿindahū illā bi-idhnih, yaʿlamu mā bayna aydīhim wa mā khalfahum, wa lā yuḥīṭūna bishayʾin min ʿilmihī illā bimā shāʾ, wasiʿa kursiyyuhus-samāwāti wal-arḍ, wa lā yaʾūduhū ḥifẓuhumā, wa huwal-ʿaliyyul-ʿaẓīm.

Allah — there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His throne extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.

Before sleep

Āmanar-rasūlu bimā unzila ilayhi mir-rabbihī wal-muʾminūn, kullun āmana billāhi wa malāʾikatihī wa kutubihī wa rusulih lā nufarriqu bayna aḥadim-mir-rusulih, wa qālū samiʿnā wa aṭaʿnā ghufrānaka rabbanā wa ilaykal-maṣīr. Lā yukallifullāhu nafsan illā wusʿahā, lahā mā kasabat wa ʿalayhā maktasabat, rabbanā lā tuʾākhidhnā in nasīnā aw akhṭaʾnā, rabbanā wa lā taḥmil ʿalaynā iṣran kamā ḥamaltahū ʿalal-ladhīna min qablinā, rabbanā wa lā tuḥammilnā mā lā ṭāqata lanā bih, waʿfu ʿannā waghfir lanā warḥamnā, anta mawlānā fanṣurnā ʿalal-qawmil-kāfirīn.

The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and so have the believers. All of them have believed in Allah and His angels and His books and His messengers, saying: 'We make no distinction between any of His messengers.' And they say: 'We hear and we obey. Grant us Your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the final destination.' Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear. It will have the consequence of what good it has gained, and it will bear the consequence of what evil it has earned. Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we forget or make error. Our Lord, and lay not upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, and burden us not with that which we have no ability to bear. And pardon us; and forgive us; and have mercy upon us. You are our protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people.

Before sleep

بِاسْمِكَ رَبِّي وَضَعْتُ جَنْبِي، وَبِكَ أَرْفَعُهُ، فَإِنْ أَمْسَكْتَ نَفْسِي فَارْحَمْهَا، وَإِنْ أَرْسَلْتَهَا فَاحْفَظْهَا بِمَا تَحْفَظُ بِهِ عِبَادَكَ الصَّالِحِينَ

Bismika rabbī waḍaʿtu janbī, wa bika arfaʿuh, fa-in amsakta nafsī farḥamhā, wa in arsaltahā faḥfaẓhā bimā taḥfaẓu bihī ʿibādakaṣ-ṣāliḥīn.

With Your name, my Lord, I lay down my side and with Your name I raise it. If You withhold my soul, have mercy on it. If You release it, protect it as You protect Your righteous servants.

On waking

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي عَافَانِي فِي جَسَدِي، وَرَدَّ عَلَيَّ رُوحِي، وَأَذِنَ لِي بِذِكْرِهِ

Al-ḥamdu lillāhil-ladhī ʿāfānī fī jasadī, wa radda ʿalayya rūḥī, wa adhina lī bidhikrih.

All praise is due to Allah, Who healed me in my body, and returned to me my soul, and permitted me to remember Him.

Before sleep

سُبْحَانَ اللهِ، الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ، اللهُ أَكْبَرُ

Subḥānallāh, al-ḥamdu lillāh, Allāhu akbar.

Glory is to Allah. All praise is for Allah. Allah is the greatest.

Before sleep

اللَّهُمَّ قِنِي عَذَابَكَ يَوْمَ تَبْعَثُ عِبَادَكَ

Allāhumma qinī ʿadhābaka yawma tabʿathu ʿibādak.

O Allah, protect me from Your punishment on the Day You resurrect Your servants.

Before sleep

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَطْعَمَنَا وَسَقَانَا وَكَفَانَا وَآوَانَا، فَكَمْ مِمَّنْ لَا كَافِيَ لَهُ وَلَا مُؤْوِيَ

Al-ḥamdu lillāhil-ladhī aṭʿamanā wa saqānā wa kafānā wa āwānā, fakam mimman lā kāfiya lahū wa lā muʾwī.

All praise is for Allah Who fed us, gave us drink, has been sufficient for us, and has sheltered us. For how many are there who have no one sufficient for them and no one to shelter them.

Before sleep

اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ خَلَقْتَ نَفْسِي وَأَنْتَ تَتَوَفَّاهَا، لَكَ مَمَاتُهَا وَمَحْيَاهَا، إِنْ أَحْيَيْتَهَا فَاحْفَظْهَا، وَإِنْ أَمَتَّهَا فَاغْفِرْ لَهَا، اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْعَافِيَةَ

Allāhumma anta khalaqta nafsī wa anta tatawaff āhā, laka mamātuhā wa maḥyāhā, in aḥyaytahā faḥfaẓhā, wa in amattahā faghfir lahā. Allāhumma innī asʾalukal-ʿāfiyah.

O Allah, You have created my soul and it is You who will take it back. Its death and its life belong to You. If You give it life, protect it, and if You cause it to die, forgive it. O Allah, I ask You for well-being.

Before sleep

اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ السَّمَوَاتِ وَرَبَّ الْأَرْضِ وَرَبَّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِيمِ، رَبَّنَا وَرَبَّ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ، فَالِقَ الْحَبِّ وَالنَّوَى، مُنْزِلَ التَّوْرَاةِ وَالْإِنْجِيلِ وَالْفُرْقَانِ، أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ كُلِّ ذِي شَرٍّ أَنْتَ آخِذٌ بِنَاصِيَتِهِ، أَنْتَ الْأَوَّلُ فَلَيْسَ قَبْلَكَ شَيْءٌ، وَأَنْتَ الْآخِرُ فَلَيْسَ بَعْدَكَ شَيْءٌ، وَأَنْتَ الظَّاهِرُ فَلَيْسَ فَوْقَكَ شَيْءٌ، وَأَنْتَ الْبَاطِنُ فَلَيْسَ دُونَكَ شَيْءٌ، اقْضِ عَنَّا الدَّيْنَ وَأَغْنِنَا مِنَ الْفَقْرِ

Allāhumma rabba-s-samāwāti wa rabba-l-arḍi wa rabba-l-ʿarshil-ʿaẓīm, rabbanā wa rabba kulli shayʾ, fāliqa-l-ḥabbi wa-n-nawā, munzilat-tawrāti wa-l-injīli wa-l-furqān, aʿūdhu bika min sharri kulli dhī sharrin anta ākhidhun bināṣiyatih, antal-awwalu fa-laysa qablaka shayʾ, wa antal-ākhiru fa-laysa baʿdaka shayʾ, wa antaẓ-ẓāhiru fa-laysa fawqaka shayʾ, wa antal-bāṭinu fa-laysa dūnaka shayʾ, iqḍi ʿannad-dayna wa aghninā minal-faqr.

O Allah, Lord of the heavens, Lord of the earth and Lord of the Magnificent Throne, our Lord and Lord of all things, Splitter of the grain and the date-stone, Revealer of the Torah, the Gospel and the Criterion — I seek refuge in You from the evil of every creature that You seize by the forelock. You are the First and there is nothing before You. You are the Last and there is nothing after You. You are the Manifest and there is nothing above You. You are the Hidden and there is nothing beneath You. Settle our debt and spare us from poverty.

Before sleep

اللَّهُمَّ أَسْلَمْتُ نَفْسِي إِلَيْكَ، وَوَجَّهْتُ وَجْهِي إِلَيْكَ، وَفَوَّضْتُ أَمْرِي إِلَيْكَ، وَأَلْجَأْتُ ظَهْرِي إِلَيْكَ، رَغْبَةً وَرَهْبَةً إِلَيْكَ، لَا مَلْجَأَ وَلَا مَنْجَا مِنْكَ إِلَّا إِلَيْكَ، آمَنْتُ بِكِتَابِكَ الَّذِي أَنْزَلْتَ، وَبِنَبِيِّكَ الَّذِي أَرْسَلْتَ

Allāhumma aslamtu nafsī ilayk, wa wajjahtu wajhī ilayk, wa fawwaḍtu amrī ilayk, wa aljaʾtu ẓahrī ilayk, raghbatan wa rahbatan ilayk, lā malja wa lā manjā minka illā ilayk, āmantu bikitābikal-ladhī anzalt, wa binabiyyikal-ladhī arsalt.

O Allah, I have submitted myself to You, I have turned my face to You, committed my affairs to You, and depend on You for protection out of desire for You and out of fear of You. There is no refuge and no place of safety from You but with You. I believe in Your Book which You have revealed and in Your Prophet whom You have sent.

On waking

لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ، لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ، الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ، وَسُبْحَانَ اللهِ، وَلَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ، وَاللهُ أَكْبَرُ، وَلَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللهِ

Lā ilāha illallāhu waḥdahu lā sharīka lah, lahul-mulku wa lahul-ḥamd wa huwa ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīr. Al-ḥamdu lillāh, wa subḥānallāh, wa lā ilāha illallāh, wallāhu akbar, wa lā ḥawla wa lā quwwata illā billāh.

None has the right to be worshipped but Allah alone, without partner, to Him belongs the Dominion and to Him is the praise, and He has power over all things. Glory is to Allah. All praise is for Allah. None has the right to be worshipped but Allah. Allah is the greatest. There is no might nor power except by Allah.

Before sleep

أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللهِ التَّامَّةِ مِنْ غَضَبِهِ وَشَرِّ عِبَادِهِ، وَمِنْ هَمَزَاتِ الشَّيَاطِينِ وَأَنْ يَحْضُرُونِ

Aʿūdhu bikalimātillāhit-tāmmati min ghaḍabihī wa sharri ʿibādih, wa min hamazātish-shayāṭīni wa an yaḥḍurūn.

I seek refuge with the complete words of Allah from His anger and His punishment and the evil of His slaves, and from the evil suggestions of the shayatin and from their being present.

On waking

أَعُوذُ بِاللهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ

Aʿūdhu billāhi minash-shayṭānir-rajīm.

I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed devil.

On waking

أَعُوذُ بِاللهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ وَمِنْ شَرِّ مَا رَأَيْتُ

Aʿūdhu billāhi minash-shayṭāni wa min sharri mā raʾayt.

I seek refuge in Allah from the devil and from the evil of what I have seen.
